We did it! We’ve enabled the Lightning Network in the Relai wallet and are excited to announce the next steps to roll out the feature to all our Relaiers.
Ever since Relai launched, our customers have only had one question: When Lightning? The biggest Bitcoin scaling solution has quickly emerged as a viable option for stackers who want to send their Sats around the world in seconds.
We’ve been hard at work the last couple of months, mainly figuring out how to offer Lightning in the most user-friendly and self-custodial way possible. Today, we’re excited to announce that we’ve managed to solve these challenges and offer our users the powers of Lightning.
We do this by working closely with two amazing Bitcoin companies! One is our node and implementation provider, Blockstream. We use their Core Lightning implementation, which allows us to be flexible with other Lightning setups as well as using their node. Our second partner is Breez, with their SDK. This provides us access to a wide range of Lightning Service Providers (LSPs) and partners in the network.
Why we decided to implement the Lightning Network
The Lightning Network has quickly emerged as the go-to scaling solution for the Bitcoin network. Not only is it great to use Bitcoin in everyday situations, such as paying for a cup of coffee or goods in a shop, but it’s also incredibly fast and much cheaper compared to on-chain transactions.
These are all attributes we want to utilize for our Relaiers as well. The Lightning feature allows you to swap a portion of your Bitcoin savings stack into a spendable Bitcoin stack. One with which you can buy coffee, tip your favorite creators online, or simply send some Sats to friends and family.
We also intend to offer the ability to buy your Bitcoin with Lightning soon, becoming one of the first European Bitcoin apps offering a Lightning brokerage. This would allow you to buy Bitcoin in under a minute, a goal we’ve had from day one on and one we’ll soon be able to realize, thanks to the Lightning network!
This Lightning launch will still be in BETA. To use Lightning, you need to update to the latest version 2.8.1. However, we’re looking forward to getting out of it soon and offering Lightning for even more use cases. Make sure to follow us on social media for more announcements soon!
